Banana Leaf South Indian Restaurant in Los Angeles (Culver City, CA) — Well Known for Best Authentic Biryani’s Spot
What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when we say banana leaf? Greenery, environment, banana, or something nature-related? But for every South Indian/Indian out there, it represents emotion and a sign of traditional food.
Banana leaf’s significance in India
Let’s paint a picture, the leaf is laid in a way that the tip is towards the left. On the top left, there’s an explosion of flavors! We have pickles (mango, lime), palaya(sabzi), papad/fryums, and kosamabari(the Indian take on salad). Now the bottom half is the main course, which usually includes lemon rice, rice, and dal/sambhar/rasam, payasam, and holige(occasionally). This is the basic outline the states in the South vary it accordingly. But, it’s all in the detail and presentation, hot rice with ghee and spicy, mouth-watering sambhar, palaya’s cooked to perfection with fresh coconut gratings. That’s one side of the tale.
The other is, Indians and people of other tropical and subtropical areas have been using banana leaves for centuries now, cooking, wrapping, and serving food being the primary their uses. They are also used for decorative and symbolic purposes in the Indian and Buddhist culture. People present offerings to deities on banana leaves.
Why banana leaf?
Of course, there are hundreds of other leaves that are humungous enough to eat on them. Why banana leaves you ask? These leaves contain large amounts of polyphenols in simpler words anti-oxidants. Hot food served on banana leaves absorbs these antioxidant properties preventing several lifestyle diseases. They are also super hygienic; they have a thick wax-like coating that prevents dirt and dust from sticking to the surface. Let’s not forget the earthly flavors it adds to the food making it all the more delicious!
