Vegan Indian food in Silver Lake (Los Angeles)
Food is a highly personal choice. As the saying goes, “You are what you eat.” Yet, some of the biggest myths regarding food are, “meat is king”, “if you don’t eat meat, you won’t get enough protein in your diet”, and so on. Who says so? Aren’t people who eat vegan food healthy? How are vegetarians getting their portion of protein? Let’s find out!
What is Vegan?
Veganism is a type of diet that excludes meat, dairy products, and all other animal-based ingredients. Someone who follows this type of diet or philosophy is called a vegan. This doesn’t mean there’s no option left. There are vegan alternatives to most meaty foods available. Most people are shifting to this type of diet due to ethical, environmental, and personal reasons. According to Forbes, Los Angeles ranks second in the list of top 20 cities for vegans and vegetarians in the US. Joel Fuhrman, M.D., author of New York Times bestseller Eat To Live, says that “In fact, broccoli has about the same amount of protein as steak.”
